If we could get every Northwest Indiana homeowner to build one habit, it would be this: change your furnace filter. It is the single cheapest, easiest thing you can do for your heating and cooling system, it takes about two minutes, and it prevents a shocking share of the breakdowns we get called out for.
And yet the filter is the most forgotten part of the whole system. Let us fix that with a clear answer on how often, and settle the confusing question of which filter to actually buy.
How often to change it
There is no single magic number, because it depends on the filter and your home. Here is the practical version:
- 1-inch fiberglass or pleated filters: check monthly, change every 1 to 3 months.
- 4- to 5-inch thick “media” filters: typically every 6 to 12 months.
- Change more often if: you have pets, someone in the home has allergies or asthma, you are running the system hard through a deep freeze or a heat wave, or you have recently done any remodeling or sanding.
The easiest habit is a monthly look. Pull the filter, hold it up to a light. If light barely passes through, it is done, regardless of what the calendar says.
Why it matters more than you think
A filter’s main job is not actually cleaning your air (more on that below), it is protecting your equipment by keeping dust off the blower and the coils. When the filter clogs, airflow drops, and that causes real problems:
- In winter, the furnace can overheat behind the restriction and shut down on a safety limit. A clogged filter is one of the top reasons a furnace won’t turn on.
- In summer, starved airflow can cause the AC’s evaporator coil to freeze into a block of ice, which stops it cooling entirely.
- Year-round, the blower motor works harder against the restriction, which raises your energy use and shortens the motor’s life.
A dollar filter changed on time prevents repairs that cost hundreds. It is the best return on effort in your whole home.
What MERV actually means
Filters are rated by MERV, which stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. In plain terms, a higher MERV number catches smaller particles. The scale runs from about 1 to 16 for residential filters.
- MERV 1–4: cheap fiberglass. Protects the equipment, catches only large debris. The bare minimum.
- MERV 8–11: the sweet spot for most homes. Captures dust, pollen, mold spores, and pet dander while still letting your system breathe.
- MERV 13+: captures very fine particles, but it is dense. In a system that was not designed for it, that density restricts airflow, and you are back to the strained-furnace problem, just caused by the filter instead of dirt.
Here is the counterintuitive part: the highest-MERV filter is not automatically the best choice. Forcing a very dense filter into a standard 1-inch slot can choke a system that was designed for something lighter, doing more harm than good. The ENERGY STAR heating and cooling guidance and most manufacturers point to matching the filter to what your system can handle.
If you want genuinely cleaner air
If your real goal is cleaner air, for allergies, odors, or finer contaminants, do not try to solve it by jamming the densest possible filter into the furnace.
