Here is a hard truth about home comfort: you can install the best, most efficient furnace on the market and still be disappointed if your house leaks heat. A furnace only makes warmth. Keeping that warmth inside is a separate job, and it is one a lot of Northwest Indiana homes quietly fail at.
The good news is that late summer and early fall is the perfect time to fix it, before you are relying on the heat every day. So let us look at where warmth actually escapes a home, and where your money does the most good.
Where the heat goes
Every house is different, but the pattern is remarkably consistent. Here is roughly where a typical home loses its heat:
Notice what surprises most people. Windows, the thing everyone blames first, are often one of the smaller losses. The big, fixable ones are air leaks and gaps and leaky ductwork, and those are exactly the two most homeowners never think about.
The one most people miss: your ducts
If your home has forced-air heat, all your warmth travels through ductwork to reach your rooms. And in a typical house, those ducts leak. Joints separate, connections were never sealed well, and sections run through attics and crawlspaces. The result is that 20 to 30 percent of the heated air can escape before it ever reaches a vent, dumped into spaces you are not trying to heat.
Think about what that means. Nearly a third of what you pay to heat can be leaking into your attic. It is also why some rooms are always cold no matter how high you set the thermostat: the warm air is escaping on the way there.
This is fixable, and not by tearing your house apart. Aeroseal duct sealing seals leaks from the inside of the duct system, reaching gaps you could never get to by hand. The rest of the checklist
Beyond ducts, here is where to focus this fall, roughly in order of bang-for-buck:
- Seal air leaks. Caulk and weatherstrip around windows, doors, and anywhere pipes or wires pass through walls. Do not forget the attic hatch, recessed lights, and the rim joist in the basement. These small gaps add up to the equivalent of leaving a window open.
- Check attic insulation. Heat rises, so the attic is the escape hatch. If your insulation is thin, uneven, or matted down, topping it up is one of the best long-term investments in a cold climate like ours.
- Weatherstrip doors and the garage. Feel for drafts on a windy day. If daylight shows under an exterior door, so does your heat.
- Address obvious window drafts. You do not always need new windows. Weatherstripping, caulk, and a tight storm window handle a lot.
Why this matters more than a bigger furnace
Here is the trap people fall into. The house is cold and drafty, so they assume they need a bigger, more powerful furnace. But installing more heating capacity to make up for heat you are leaking is like turning up the faucet to fill a bucket with a hole in it. You will spend more every month forever.
Seal the envelope and the ducts first, and often a properly sized system keeps the house more comfortable than a bigger one ever did, at a lower running cost. A good load calculation done after sealing gives you the right-sized system, not an oversized one bought to cover leaks.
Do it before you need it
The reason to do this in late summer or early fall is comfort and timing. It is easier to work in an attic before it is freezing, easier to spot drafts when you can compare inside to a cool evening, and far nicer to head into winter already sealed up rather than chasing cold rooms in January.
